You are probably following the events in Aleppo and Shehba and the attacks by the HTS and NSA and the resulting wave of refugees from the region in detail. Because of these events, we turn to you today with our request to advocate to stop an impending humanitarian catastrophe and human rights violations that are currently taking place through the attacks and displacement of people in the Shehba and Aleppo region.

On 27 November several thousand jihadist terrorists from the group Hayat Tahir el Sham (HTS), a Turkish-backed follow-on organization of Al-Qaeda in Syria, attacked villages around Aleppo by surprise and almost completely captured the city on 29 November. Important roads were blocked and the region was cut off from other parts of the country. The images on social media are reminiscent of the Islamic State. They are the same fighters, the same shouts and the same methods of terror. The people who have been living in refugee camps in Sheba since 2018 due to the Turkish invasion, have been evacuated to protect the population from genocide, now they are once again exposed to the cruelty of flight. We are equally concerned for all those trapped in the villages and besieged neighborhoods of Aleppo.

In the fight against IS, a terrorist organization that has been terrifying people and societies in the Middle East and around the world with its inhumane and misogynistic ideology and its crimes and massacres, you and the SDF have been partners in North and East Syria since 2014. It is one of the world’s leading executioners of women. In 2023 alone, at least 24 women have been executed, and many more are at risk. Many are unknown and invisible. Iran uses the death penalty as a tool of retribution and systematic oppression, routinely imposing sentences after unfair trials that fail to meet minimum standards of due process.
