In light of recent comments by U.S. Special Envoy to Syria Thomas Barrack regarding the negotiations between the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria and the transitional government in Damascus, Kongra Star stresses the importance of the role that international mediators can play during this critical phase.

Syria, which has been exhausted by wars, authoritarianism, and exclusionary policies for over six decades under Ba’ath rule, now has a historic opportunity to rebuild itself on new foundations based on justice, equality, and recognition of the country’s cultural and societal diversity — the true essence of Syrian identity.

The past years have proven that centralized policies and the denial of the rights of different communities were among the main causes of the crisis. That’s why any national dialogue that does not include the demands of all communities — especially women and the forces that led the struggle — will be incomplete and harmful.

We at Kongra Star believe that mediation efforts must focus on building mutual trust among Syrians and supporting a Syrian-led solution that brings security, stability, and guarantees real participation for all communities in shaping the future of the country. This dialogue must be rooted in democracy and decentralization — the true guarantees against a return to war and division.

As a women’s movement, Kongra Star considers the recognition of women’s rights and their leading role in rebuilding Syria to be essential for achieving justice and true reconciliation. There can be no peace in Syria without ensuring the rights and dignity of women, and no political process can succeed without their genuine involvement.

Finally, we affirm that preserving the unity of Syria is not about slogans, but about embracing diversity, respecting the will of peoples, and building a democratic, decentralized system that protects rights and freedoms. Therefore, we call on the transitional government and international mediators — especially the United States — to play a responsible and historic role in helping Syria move out of darkness and toward a democratic, safe, and just future for all its sons and daughters.

July 13, 2025

Syria is going through a sensitive period of change after more than fifteen years of crisis and war.
